CDM Smith's Charleston, WV team is seeking a candidate to inspect and monitor construction activities at the project site(s). Senior Inspector I must be able to perform the most complex inspection activities for the 5 categories of inspection: 1) Roadway 2) Bridges 3) Drainage 4) Erosion & Control 5) Maintenance & Traffic. Candidate will work under limited supervision or direct supervision depending on the demonstrated knowledge for the assignment. Work will require the knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in highway construction; knowledge of geometry and basic mathematics; ability to read, interpret and explain construction plans and drawings, contract provisions, and specifications; and communications ability.
Supervises smaller projects with up to 2 Inspectors assigned. Develops the Inspection Plan, assigns work to Inspectors, evaluates their work, and solves problems.
Performs complex and routine/standard inspections of construction to evaluate if appropriate materials and construction processes are used; and that construction conforms to plans, specifications, and special provisions. Uses higher grade of equipment and performs complex calculations to perform inspection.
Work requires advanced knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in highway construction; knowledge of mathematical functions including geometry and trigonometry; skill in the use of office equipment such as computers and calculators; advanced ability to read, interpret and explain construction plans and drawings, specifications, and provisions; review and prepare reports; communication skills and ability to instruct other employees in proper work methods.
Reviews drawings to prepare for the inspection. Understands the design of the construction that will be inspected.
Documents the results of the inspection and communicates to the supervisor.
Conducts field measurements to establish quantities for pay item documentation as well as other contract administration documentation.
Inspects work zones for proper traffic control setup, erosion control devices and maintenance thereof, utility coordination and right-of-way issue resolution.

CDM Smith Employment Type:
High School Diploma or equivalent. 0 Years’ experience required.
Ability to obtain certifications as required from a State Highway Agency or National Entity such as ACI (American Concrete Institute)
West Virginia Division of Highway (WVDOH) experience a plus.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
The position requires a minimum of 8 hours per day of walking, standing, lifting, and climbing outdoors in all types of climates. Must be able to lift 50 lbs..
Ability to work at heights, and within confined spaces with the required training for these activities.
